Why is Disney’s Fantasia so popular?
Over 75 years old : Fantasia is still one of the most exciting and iconic Disney films ever produced. The name ‘Fantasia’ actually refers to an improvised piece of music – made up on the spot. This working title stuck as it was such an imaginative project for Disney. Walt Disney worked with the Philadelphia Orchestra to bring classical music to life. It was a new way of exploring expression of mood and storytelling and aimed to spread enjoyment of classical music to a new audience. The Disney magic used the power of music to express thoughts and feelings. It was imaginative and exciting and has passed the test of time.
In the 1950s, educators really backed this new film because it promoted classical music. Then, during the 1960s, Fantasia was further valued and seen as ‘Dreamlike’ which fitted with the evolving ‘Flower power’ and ‘Peace / Love’ movements.
In the Disney parks today we can still see strong roots to Fantasia; namely Philharmagic shows, the Fantasmic nighttime show and the meet and greet with Mickey the Magician.
Philharmagic :
This is a 12 minute fantasy adventure film on a 180 degree screen. The theatre is set up as a concert hall and features Donald as the star of the show. Donald pinches Mickeys iconic sorcerers hat and finds himself in a world of Disney characters and musical sequences. This is one of my favourite Disney attractions as it features so many Disney favourites and just leaves me smiling and humming. There’s also a themed gift shop at the exit.
Fantasmic:
Like the Fantasia film, this nightly outdoor show is all about the power of imagination. It features live characters, lasers, water boat floats and mist scene projections. It looks into Mickeys imagination and ends with him battling the villians. The music and effects are spectacular…just don’t sit in the front row or you’ll get wet!
Meeting Mickey the Magician:
Most Disney parks feature Mickey in his magicians outfit. The rooms are well themed and Mickey has been known to show card tricks. He may also show you his iconic hat.
Fantasia has still remained a firm favourite and recently, possibly due to the anniversary, there has been an increase again in interest in the film. Companies such as Loungefly have produced some beautiful Fantasia products.
